Colombian pop-star Shakira and her husband, Spanish soccer stud Gerard Pique, welcomed a baby boy into the world Tuesday night. “We are happy to announce the birth of Milan Pique Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Pique, born January 22nd at 9:36pm, in Barcelona, Spain,” the sensational singer posted on her website Tuesday.
“The name Milan (pronounced MEE-lahn), means dear, loving and gracious in Slavic; in Ancient Roman, eager and laborious; and in Sanskrit, unification.”
Milan, the couple’s first child, weighed 6 pounds and 6 ounces at birth, the hospital confirmed, adding that both the mother and child are “in excellent health.”
In the statement, Shakira also joked that, “Just like his father, baby Milan became a member of FC Barcelona at birth.” Earlier Tuesday, the Latina singer was spotted heading into a Barcelona hospital.
“I'd like to ask you all to accompany me in your prayers on this very important day of my life. Shak," she tweeted to her fans in both English and Spanish Tuesday about going into labor.
In addition to Pique, Shakira, 35, was joined by her father and siblings at the hospital.
The couple, who have been together since March 2011, just posed for a revealing shoot released last week in which "The Voice" judge bared her very pregnant belly.
Shakira, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, decided to put her baby joy toward a good cause.
"To celebrate the arrival of our first child, we hope that, in his name, other less privileged children in the world can have their basic needs covered through gifts and donations," the couple said in a release to fans when announcing the "Inspired Gifts" program.
